JUNE 18TH - 24TH
Uniting artists from New Orleans and Brazil for workshops, talks and performances, this week-long mini festival, curated by programmer, dancer and choreographer Adrianna Yanuziello in collaboration with Lula Music & Arts, culminates on June 24th with a free performance by Chief Adjuah at the 2024 TD Toronto Jazz Festival.
Workshops and masterclasses at Earlscourt Park and Lula Lounge will feature three leading figures in Samba and Afro-Brazilian Dance including Mayombe Masai, Nildinha Fonsêca & Zé Ricardo. You can also catch the special guests as they perform in a special edition of Uma Nota's regular Terriero do Samba event on June 23rd. See details below.

Interweaving of movement & ritual, this debut performance unites musical frequencies to celebrate & honour the connections between New Orleans & Brazil. In collaboration with special guest performers direct from Salvador, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro Brazil, Chief Adjuah "stretches" sound to encounter and explore African traditions.
Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah [formerly Christian Scott] is a two-time Edison Award-winning, six-time Grammy Award-nominated, Doris Duke Award in the Arts awardee. He is a sonic architect, trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, designer of innovative technologies and musical instruments (including The Stretch Music app, Adjuah Trumpet, Siren, Sirenette, Chief Adjuah’s Bow and Chief Adjuah’s N’Goni). He is also the founder and CEO of the Stretch Music App and Recording Company.
Adjuah is Chieftain and Oba of the Xodokan Nation as well as the current Grand Griot of New Orleans. He is the grandson of Louisiana luminary and legend, the late Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr., Guardians Institute founder and Grand Griot, Herreast Harrison. And is the nephew of Jazz innovator and NEA Jazz Master saxophonist-composer, Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr. Adjuah (and his twin brother Kiel) joined his grandfather’s Guardians of the Flame banner in 1989 at the age 5.
